Consular jurisdiction decides which office processes your application, based on where you live, not where you prefer to go.

How to find yours:

  • Check the embassy's website for a jurisdiction list. Every embassy publishes one, usually under "consular services" or "jurisdiction."
  • For Indian visas in the US, VFS Global assigns centers by state of residence. Apply through the wrong center and the application bounces.
  • For Schengen visas, the application center (VFS, BLS, TLScontact) is assigned by region.
  • For US visas, jurisdiction is looser: in India you can choose among the five posts, so pick by wait time.

When in doubt, email the consulate before paying any fee. A two-sentence email beats a refused application.
